Why do VW owners hang Flower Garlands (Leis) from their rear view mirrors?

This is a question which has been asked many times over the years and below is a post we made back in 2016.

Most people have seen a classic VW van with a flower garland adorning the rear view mirror and most people just shrug their shoulders and think “Hmm, VW owners”.

Those of us who drive VW vans use them for a variety of reasons.

Many people see them as a must-have for their bus. They go out looking for a garland that either matches the colour scheme of their beloved bay or their scrumptious splittie, or simply one in their favourite colour.

People often buy them simply so that other VW owners will give them “The Wave” – a very specific 2 fingers raised, wobbly wristed “YO DUDE!!” kind of affair.

T4 and T5 owners especially are coming into the new world of lei ownership because of the dreaded “builders Van” syndrome.

There is no greater feeling, whilst cruising the highways and byways, than when you see the telltale form of a VW bus headed towards you. You smile, you get your 2 fingered salute ready, your hand is half way raised and then you realise ….. Its a builders van. At this point you either go with it and continue with the wave and feel embarrassed when the oncoming driver ignores you. Or you lower your hand in shame and continue your journey feeling temporarily deflated.

The solution preferred by many is that you will only wave if you see a lei. This is a great way to save face but also an even better way to generate happiness in the sure and certain knowledge that as you start to raise your hand and spot the lei, you will be greeted with a smile and a wave in return for your efforts.

This is far from the complete story. Please comment below and tell us your Lei related stories.

WORKING FROM HOME

Due to the cancellation of so many of our events this year in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have decided that we will be isolating our family as much as possible and making all of our products available online .

We will add new stock onto the website as and when it is available. (ie: as Jean makes it)

We are offering a delivery service as well as a collection service. If you opt to collect, you will be asked to arrange a collection time and your products will be left in a safe place for you to collect. There will be no need for you to come into contact with anyone so you could make this a safe family excursion. Maybe take a walk in the New Forest, and get a few hours of fresh air.

Whilst none of our family have so far been affected, we believe that the best way to keep everyone safe is for everyone to take precautions. We are trying to do our bit to protect the country by keeping ourselves and our customers safe.

Please keep safe everyone .

Tiki-Tina’s bittersweet arrival

Firstly, we would like to apologise for going a bit quiet since Tiki-Tinas arrival.

here is why……………..

This was a very exciting week. Tiki-Tina finally arrived with us after a delay made her miss her debut at Busfest 2019.

The arrival seemed to go smoothly and we opened a few boxes to check her out……

This is where the nightmare began.

The first few boxes we opened contained a broken Tiki-Tina and we went into panic mode. We rallied together as a family and spent the next 20 hours opening boxes and cataloging what we found.

We can now reveal that we are the proud owners of 262 beautiful Tiki-Tinas which are ready to go out into the world. The remaining 738 will sadly be consigned to a ceremonial funeral pyre.

There will be insurance claims, arguments with suppliers and surveyors in our near future and I feel sure that the trauma is not yet over but here is the good news…

TIKI-TINA IS EVEN MORE OF A LIMITED EDITION THAT WE EVER PLANNED.

we have 262 Tiki-Tinas to sell and we will be bringing a very limited number with us to each show going forward.

All pre-orders are being re-packaged and sent out as we speak and online sales will continue for the moment. We may need to stop online sales at some point so that we can save a few for our loyal friends at the shows.

we look forward to seeing you soon

The Tiki-Ted team.

Tiki-Ted is excited

Since leaving home on the beautiful atoll of Takuu, Tiki-Ted has had some wonderful adventures but has ultimately been feeling a little lonely. He had to leave his wonderful girlfriend behind and the last he saw of her she was sitting on the beach nodding and waving him goodbye.

Tiki-Ted and Tiki-Tina have been together for eons and they are so alike but there are subtle differences. Whilst Tiki-Ted loves to rock out to Bohemian Rhapsody, Tiki-Tina simply cannot get enough of ABBA. In fact, while Ted was sailing off that day, Tina was actually listening to “Slipping through my fingers” with a tear in her eye.

Tiki-Tina simply cannot resist Rocking out to Mamma Mia, she has even been known to hum along 🙂

Whilst Tiki-Ted loves the adventure of visiting new places, Tiki-Tina is more about taking in the beauty of all the wonderful places in the world. Her selfies, always seem to have a monument or natural feature in the background.

Tiki-Tina is a bit of a hippy, a free spirit and a dreamer. She wants to spread happiness, peace and love around the world and most definitely does not approve of single use plastics. Although she would be the first to agree that the new McDonalds straw is useless.
